## Sewer Line Assessment: How Urgent Is It?

Nine questions about what you are seeing. The result tells you whether to act now, schedule an inspection or keep watching, and whether the problem may be the City's main instead of your line. Nothing here asks you to open, touch or test anything.

### How the result is decided

The rules are simple and fixed. Sewage coming up inside right now means act now. Neighbors backing up or sewage at a street manhole points to the City main. Otherwise, signs that point to the shared line add up: several slow drains on different sides of the house, repeated clearing, a wet or smelly spot along the line, gurgling, or a camera report that already shows a defect. Enough of them together means schedule an inspection soon.

One slow fixture on its own usually means a clog in that fixture or its branch rather than the sewer line, which is a cheaper fix. That distinction matters, because a single clog is sometimes sold as a failing lateral.

### What it cannot do

It cannot see inside the pipe. Roots, offsets, a belly or a collapse only show up on camera, and the right repair depends on which one it is. The [camera inspection](/sewer-camera-inspection/) page explains what happens on that visit, and [signs of a broken sewer line](/guide/signs-of-a-broken-sewer-line/) goes deeper on what each symptom can mean.

### Questions people ask

#### Can this assessment tell me if my sewer line is broken?

No. It sorts urgency from what you can see and hear, such as backups, gurgling or a wet spot in the yard. Whether the pipe is cracked, offset or collapsed can only be seen with a camera inspection.

#### What if the result says the problem may be the City main?

If neighbors are backing up too, or sewage is coming out of a manhole in the street, the public main is the likely cause. In the City of Los Angeles, call LA Sanitation’s 24-hour line at 1-800-773-2489.

#### Is it safe to look for the cleanout myself?

Finding it is fine; it is usually a capped pipe near the house or the property line. Do not open it while the line is backed up, because sewage under pressure can come out of it.
