Trenchless sewer repair in Los Angeles means fixing or replacing a sewer lateral without a continuous trench from the house to the street. The two methods that do most of this work are lining, which builds a new pipe inside the old one, and pipe bursting, which pulls a new pipe through the old one’s path. [Angeleno Sewer Line Repair](/) uses both across Los Angeles, Pasadena, Glendale and Burbank, and the camera decides whether either one fits.

The word “trenchless” sells well, and it is often stretched. It does not mean no digging, and it does not mean any line can be done this way. It means the excavation shrinks from a trench to a few defined access points, and that the pipe itself has to cooperate.

### Why trenchless appeals in Los Angeles

Plenty of LA laterals run under something expensive to remove. A 1920s bungalow in Highland Park may have its clay lateral under a stamped concrete driveway. A hillside house above Studio City may have the line under terraced stairs and retaining walls. A Westside lot may have a mature ficus or a parkway tree sitting directly over the route. On jobs like these the cost of digging up and replacing what sits on top of the pipe can rival the cost of the pipe work itself.

Trenchless methods move most of that cost out of the job. The trade-off is that they ask more of the existing pipe: lining needs a host pipe that is still open, and bursting needs a continuous path and room for its pits. When those conditions are missing, trenchless is the wrong answer no matter what sits on top.

### The access it still needs

Every trenchless job starts from somewhere and ends somewhere. Being clear about where those points are, and what will be dug at each, is the most useful thing a bid can tell you.

**Lining** typically goes in through the cleanout, the capped fitting near the house or at the property line. If the line has no cleanout, or the existing one is in the wrong place or too small, one is installed first, which means a small excavation down to the pipe. Some lining jobs also need a pit at the far end to finish the liner or to reach a section the cleanout cannot.

**Pipe bursting** needs two pits: a launch pit where the new pipe enters and a receiving pit where the bursting head and cable are pulled out. Each pit has to be deep enough to reach the pipe and long enough for the equipment and the bend of the new pipe as it enters the ground. On a lateral that continues into the street, the receiving pit may be at the property line or in the right-of-way.

Those pits get backfilled and the surface over them restored. On a typical lot that is a patch of lawn or a small square of concrete rather than a trench across the yard, which is the whole point.

### When trenchless is ruled out

The camera answers this, and a good inspection report will say so directly. These findings usually take trenchless off the table for at least part of the line:

- **A belly.** Lining follows the existing geometry, so a sag holding water stays a sag with a smoother wall. Bursting mostly follows the old path too. Correcting slope means [excavating](/sewer-line-excavation/) and re-bedding that section. More on this in [sewer line belly repair](/sewer-line-belly-repair/).
- **Collapse.** A liner needs an open host pipe to form against. A section that has caved in has to be dug up, or in some cases burst through if the head can still find a path. See [collapsed sewer line repair](/collapsed-sewer-line-repair/).
- **Severe offsets or deformation.** A joint that has shifted half the pipe’s diameter, or an Orangeburg fiber pipe that has flattened into an oval, may not take a liner cleanly.
- **Nearby utilities or structures.** Bursting pushes fragments outward into the soil, so a gas line, water service or foundation footing close to the path can rule it out or require extra excavation to protect them.
- **No workable access.** A lateral that runs under the house with no way to reach it, or a site with no room for a pit, can limit both methods.

None of these has to rule out trenchless for the whole job. A common LA pattern is a mixed scope: dig and re-bed the low section near the house, then line or burst the rest toward the street.

### Lining or bursting

These are different methods, not two brands of the same thing.

[Sewer pipe lining](/sewer-pipe-lining/) (cured-in-place pipe, or CIPP) inserts a resin-saturated tube into the cleaned old pipe and cures it into a new jointless pipe inside the host. It works best where the old pipe is cracked, root-damaged at the joints or corroded, but still open and still mostly round. It is the least disruptive option and often the only reasonable one under a slab or a driveway.

[Pipe bursting](/pipe-bursting/) drags a cone-shaped head through the old pipe, fracturing it and pushing the pieces outward while a new high-density polyethylene pipe follows behind. It replaces the pipe rather than lining it, so it can handle pipe that is too broken to line, and it can often go up a size. It needs the two pits and clearance from other utilities.

### Trenchless work under the street

In the City of Los Angeles the property owner is responsible for the whole lateral, including the lower section from the property line to the main. Trenchless methods do not change who can work there. Any repair, replacement or rehabilitation in the public right-of-way needs a Bureau of Engineering S-Permit, issued only to an active Bonded Sewer Contractor.

The Bureau’s general conditions add specific requirements for trenchless work. Lining in the right-of-way requires camera video before and after, and the City’s inspector determines whether lining is feasible for that pipe. Pipe bursting in the right-of-way must be done by a Bonded Sewer Contractor and also requires video before and after. If street pavement is cut for a pit, the City’s street damage restoration fee applies, set per square foot by the street’s classification and how recently it was resurfaced. Details are in the [Los Angeles sewer permit guide](/guide/sewer-permit-los-angeles/) and the [street sewer lateral repair](/street-sewer-lateral-repair/) page.

Private-side trenchless work in the City needs an LADBS plumbing permit, the same as a dug replacement. Pasadena, Glendale and Burbank run their own permits and inspections.

### What trenchless sewer repair costs in Los Angeles

Typical budgeting ranges for Los Angeles-area projects, as of October 2026:

- Lining (CIPP): $135–$250 per foot, or $6,000–$15,000 for a typical lateral of about 50 feet.
- Pipe bursting: $145–$300 per foot, or $6,000–$25,000 per job.
- Camera inspection before any of it: $175–$800.

Per foot, trenchless usually costs more than digging. It wins when the restoration it avoids is expensive, and loses when the line sits under lawn that can be dug and reseeded cheaply. Pits in the street, a new cleanout, a spot repair the liner cannot bridge and hardscape over the pits all sit outside the base figure. The [trenchless sewer repair cost guide](/guide/trenchless-sewer-repair-cost-los-angeles/) walks through those drivers, and the [estimator](/tools/sewer-line-cost-estimator/) gives a range for a specific line.

These are budgeting figures, not quotes or company rates.

### Questions worth asking before you sign

A trenchless bid should be readable without a sales call. Ask which method it uses for which length of pipe, where every pit will be and how deep, what cleaning or cutting happens before a liner goes in, and how branch connections inside the line will be reopened. Ask what happens if the crew finds a section the method cannot pass, and how that is priced. Ask for the pre-work and post-work video. If two quotes describe different methods for the same line, the [quote comparison guide](/guide/how-to-compare-sewer-repair-quotes/) shows how to line them up.

Work is performed by licensed, bonded and insured contractor partners, with anything in the public right-of-way done by a City of Los Angeles Bonded Sewer Contractor under the S-Permit.

### What the work includes

- Camera inspection with surface locating, so the method is chosen from the video
- Cleaning and preparation of the old pipe before lining, or route and utility checks before bursting
- Access at the cleanout, plus launch and receiving pits where the method needs them
- Lining or bursting of the failed length, with connections at the house and toward the main
- A cleanout where the line has no usable access point
- Post-work camera video for the permit file and your own records
- Backfill and basic restoration of the access pits, with hardscape and street restoration priced separately

### Questions people ask

#### Does trenchless sewer repair really mean no digging?

No. Lining usually works from the cleanout and sometimes one small pit, and bursting needs a launch pit and a receiving pit at the ends of the run. What trenchless avoids is the long trench between those points, which is where most of the restoration cost on an open-trench job sits.

#### How long does a trenchless sewer repair take?

The on-site work for a typical residential lateral is often a day or two once permits are in hand, but preparation, cure method, pit digging and City inspection scheduling all add time. Your bid should state how long the line will be out of service, not just how long the crew will be on site.

#### Can trenchless repair fix a sagging sewer line?

Usually not. A liner takes the shape of the pipe it is installed in, so a belly stays a belly. Bursting mostly follows the old path too. Restoring slope means excavating that section and re-bedding the pipe, which can be combined with lining or bursting elsewhere on the line.

#### Is lining or pipe bursting better for my line?

It depends on what the camera shows. Lining suits a pipe that is cracked or root-damaged but still open and round, especially under a driveway or slab. Bursting suits pipe that is too broken to line but still has a continuous path, and it can upsize the line. Collapse and bellies push toward excavation.

#### Does the City of Los Angeles rebate trenchless sewer repair?

LA Sanitation's sewer lateral repair rebate of up to $2,500 is not limited to one method, so lining or bursting can qualify. It requires a licensed and bonded sewer contractor, a City-finaled permit, an itemized paid invoice and the camera video, and funds are first come, first served each year.
